California DUI FAQ

Can requirements for Alcohol Education Course (DUI classes) be completed in other states?

Typically if you have a strong reason such as a job relocation, the judge will let you transfer your requirement to complete an Alcohol Education program to another state. However, satisfying the court and California DMV are not the same thing.

To satisfy the DMV, you will likely have to file a form 1650 Waiver for termination of suspension action. If you had a private DUI attorney handle your initial DUI defense, they might help you with this process. Otherwise, you need to contact directly the Mandatory Unit of the California DUI in Sacramento at (916) 657-6576. Expect long hold times and bureaucratic runarounds.

  1. I was convicted of my 3rd DUI and sentenced to 120 days. I agreed to the ankle monitor to begin at the end of August. I just got an offer for a job in Michigan. I would leave for the job in August and, effectively not come back ever. If I am willing to be done with California for an extended period of time, does the DA have the wiggle room to let me complete the sentence by “banishment” for an extended period of time?
I would be willing to report, correspond, test and have results sent, etc. I have been out of work for over 1.5 years. I am a professor and have been given an offer to run a college department in Michigan. Its a great deal and would really help with my life, recovery, child support, etc.
